SunCulture Launches Climate Insurance to Protect Smallholder Farmers

SunCulture, in partnership with Humanity Insured, APA Insurance and IBISA, has launched SunCulture Protect – Climate Insurance, a first-of-its-kind product designed to help smallholder farmers in Kenya manage the risks posed by drought and extreme rainfall.

The insurance is embedded directly into SunCulture’s Pay-As-You-Grow (PAYG) solar irrigation financing, providing automatic protection without additional paperwork. When climate triggers such as drought or excessive rainfall occur, farmers receive fast, transparent payouts:

  • PAYG Farmers: Payouts are automatically applied to outstanding loan balances, safeguarding their investments and preventing default
  • Cash & post-loan customers: Payouts are sent directly to mobile wallets, ensuring timely support when it is needed most.

“Rainfall is no longer predictable, and that’s devastating for farmers. By combining reliable solar irrigation with climate-triggered insurance, we’re helping farmers grow more food and absorb climate shocks – protecting both their crops and peace of mind.” – Samir Ibrahim – Co-Founder & CEO at SunCulture.

Beyond Insurance, SunCulture Protect is integrated with a digital ecosystem that includes the SunCulture MarketPlace, Customer App and the Maarifa data platform. This ecosystem equips farmers with:

  1. Real-time weather alerts and climate-smart agronomy guidance
  2. Financial planning and risk management tools
  3. Easy access to policy details, payouts and loan information

The partnership brings together innovative parametric insurance design from IBISA, underwriting by APA Insurance and reinsurance by Africa Re, ensuring rapid, transparent support without the need for claims filing.

Launched in Kenya in October 2025, SunCulture Protect is a scalable solution aimed at strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers across Africa. By combining solar-powered irrigation, data-driven digital tools and automated climate protection, the program empowers farmers to invest in their future, grow more food and withstand unpredictable weather.
