From Water Scarcity to Agricultural Growth: How Moses Transformed His Farm with Solar-Powered Irrigation
When Moses Njoroge settled in Kiambu in 1984, access to water was one of the biggest challenges facing his household and farm.
For years, he relied on a manual pulley system to draw water from a well, a labor-intensive process that limited the amount of water available for farming and everyday use.
Water scarcity made it difficult to expand agricultural activities and meet the growing needs of his family and community.
In December 2020, he invested in a SunCulture solar-powered water pump. The system immediately transformed how he accessed and managed water on his farm.
The pump enables him to fill his 3,500-litre water tank four to five times each day, providing up to 14,000 litres of water daily without the physical strain of manual water collection.
“The work is not tiring. When a neighbor comes to ask for water, I give it to them for free.”
With consistent access to water, Moses can irrigate his crops throughout the year, reducing his dependence on rainfall and improving farm productivity.
The reliable water supply has allowed him to grow crops such as sugarcane and avocados. As avocado season approaches, buyers regularly travel from other regions, including Nakuru, to purchase his produce.
The additional farm income helps Moses support his family’s needs, including paying school fees and other household expenses. Beyond his own farm, Moses is able to share water with neighbors when they need it, helping strengthen community resilience during dry periods.
Moses also uses the solar-powered system to charge phones and power small household devices, extending the value of the investment beyond irrigation.
Today, Moses views his solar water pump as an essential part of his farming operation. What was once a daily struggle for water has become a reliable resource that supports his crops, household, and community. By harnessing solar energy, Moses has turned a long-standing water challenge into an opportunity for growth, productivity, and improved livelihoods.
